Cranberries are not just for Thanksgiving anymore!
Cranberries have developed into more than just a side dish for Thanksgiving dinner. With all the health benefits the cranberry offers, cranberry companies, such as Urban Processing, are finding new and innovative ways to use the cranberry.
Urban Processing was established in 2001 with a goal to produce the highest quality sweetened dried cranberry on the market. In the six years of operations, the company now sells to customers all over the world and has created 40 year around full-time jobs in the Wisconsin Rapids community.
In addition to the sweetened dried cranberries, they have developed a gourmet retail line of cranberry products which include; chocolate covered cranberries, trail mixes, sweet cranberry syrup, cranberry jelly, cranberry topping, cranberry pancake mix, cranberry salsa, cranberry crackers, and cranberry cookbooks. All of these wonderful products can also be packaged in beautiful gift baskets. The retail line is marketed under Urban Best Cranberries and is sold in specialty stores throughout the United States. You can also order directly from their website at www.cranberryproducts.com.
The Urban family has been growing cranberries on their 71 acre marsh since 1987. Three generations are involved with the business which is located right in the middle of cranberry country in Wood County, Wisconsin. Wood County has been one of the largest producers of cranberries in the state for many years. Wisconsin is the largest producer of cranberries in the United States producing more than 50% of the estimated 600 million pounds harvested each year.
The health benefits of the cranberry are many and continue to grow as more research is being done. Medical research has clinically confirmed that cranberries can play an important role in maintaining urinary tract infections, prevent bacteria growth which can cause periodontal disease, contain antioxidants which play a fundamental role in slowing the oxidation that leads to heart disease, and also contain anthocyanins, proanthocyanins and phenolic compounds that are known for the anticancer properties.
